Joint pain and muscle pain are problems that are often experienced by everyone when on the move. There are a variety of drug choices that are effective in dealing with joint pain. These drugs can be in the form of oral medication, injectable drugs, to topical medications.
Standing for too long, jumping, lifting heavy loads, excessive exercise, and injury are some of the causes of joint or muscle pain. Certain medical conditions such as osteoarthritis, gout, or rheumatoid arthritis can also be a cause of pain in the joints and muscles. In Indonesia, people generally use hot balm to treat joint pain and muscle aches. They believe that the more the balm will be more effective and faster to expel joint pain. Hot balm or hot water compress does give a warm effect and feels good when applied to the pain area. Some experts even recommend an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel to further help in pain relief. However, these methods actually only reduce and provide immediate comfort, but do not overcome the inflammation that causes pain in your joints and muscles.
Here are some drug options that you can use to treat joint pain:
Medicines (Tablets, Pills)
- Paracetamol is effective for relieving mild joint pain without swelling. Not only joint pain, paracetamol is also used to treat mild and moderate pain such as headaches, menstrual cramps, toothaches, back pain, osteoarthritis, even to relieve fever.
- Joint pain medications that are classified as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium can also be used to treat moderate to severe joint pain. Use only when sick or according to doctor's instructions. Because NSAIDs can also have side effects, such as gastritis (ulcer) and potentially increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. A new NSAID class of drugs known as Cox-2 inhibitors are also good for pain relief with minimal side effects.
- A stronger opioid medication may be prescribed by your doctor if you experience severe joint pain. The use of this drug must be given in the supervision of a doctor, because it can cause nausea, decreased consciousness, addiction and dependence.
- Drugs used to treat muscle cramps can be given together with NSAIDs to increase the effects of pain relief.
Topical or topical medication (cream or gel)
Capsaicin
Topical medications (usually in cream form) that contain capsaicin can be used to reduce joint pain caused by arthritis and other conditions. Capsaicin helps send pain signals that will trigger the release of endorphins (the body's chemicals that hold back pain). But capsaicin creams can cause painful or stinging sensations in the area smeared by this cream.
Diclofenac sodium
Topical medication with diclofenac sodium content is an effective, safe and effective drug to relieve joint pain. Diclofenac sodium belongs to the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) that work by stopping the production of substances that cause pain and inflammation. Aside from working as an pain relief, NSAIDs like sodium diclofenac also have other effects such as fever and anti-inflammatory. Apply diclofenac sodium gel on the area of the skin that feels pain to relieve pain or pain in the joints, such as knees, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists, and hands. Unlike capsaicin cream which causes intense heat, sodium diclofenac gel overcomes joint pain but still feels comfortable on the skin. Topical medication containing diclofenac sodium is also safe to use because it has minimal side effects, such as local irritation to the skin (dry skin or contact dermatitis). However, even these side effects usually arise in the use of diclofenac sodium gel in the long term.
